Shapes

Age: 4-6 yrs
Groups: Small groups
Materials: Click-together shapes

The first week in my practice place the kids were learning about the different types of houses and the different rooms that we find in a house.

They were divided into groups that were going to do different activities. One of the groups were placed at a table and got some click together shapes. You click the different shapes together and you can make something. The activity they were doing with them this day was making a 3D room in a house with the shapes, so they had to decide which room they wanted to make and then try to click the different shapes together and make them look like a room.

I think this is a good activity for the children to get to know the different shapes, and to try out which shapes goes together best to make the things they want to make. And it doesn’t have to be a room or a house, they can make 3D squares and triangles and things like that as well.

A way to make this activity more natural could be to have the kids make a 3D figure of something they find outside. They could go outside first and pick some things, like a flower, and then try to make a 3D figure of a flower.
